The context problematic , behavioral economics and the transactional view : An introduction to ‘ Symposium : John Dewey and economic theory ’ Elias

چکیده
Are there empirical anomalies upon which Dewey’s theory of action sheds better light than existing neoclassical and heterodox approaches? The introduction answers in the affirmative. They are the set of anomalies highlighted by behavioral economics. These anomalies stress the centrality of context. Neoclassical theorists react to the ‘context problematic’ by claiming that context, after all, is part of either the constraint set or the preference set. Dewey and his collaborator, Bentley, called such standard rationality theories ‘interactional.’ On the other hand, heterodox economists and mainstream sociologists and anthropologists appropriate the ‘context problematic’ to buttress their normative views on how constraints such as culture, norms, and budgets mold preferences after their image. Dewey and Bentley called such normative theories “self-actional.” Both neoclassical theorists and their critics fail to see that context cannot be reduced to the constraint set, preference set, or set of norms. In contrast, Dewey and Bentley offer a fresh way to solve the ‘context problematic,’ what they call the ‘transactional view.’

Intrinsic Value: Towards A Pragmatic Theory
Intrinsic value is a concept central to the environmentalist movement. Whether one believes that natural objects have intrinsic value is supposed to determine whether one takes a ecocentric or homocentric approach to environmentalism, whether we practice deep or (merely) shallow ecology. Yet this concept is also a center of controversy and confusion. Just what does it mean for something to ha...
متن کاملTransactional Economics: John Dewey's Ways of Knowing and the Radical Subjectivism of the Austrian School
The radical subjectivism of the Austrian school of economics is a special case of Dewey’s ways of knowing. Austrian economists adopted an Aristotelian deductive approach to economic issues such as social behavior and exchange. In Dewey’s contrasting view, the scientist commends new, alternative ways of knowing to the scientific community, offering more profound insight or more efficacious pract...
متن کاملA Pragmatic Solution to the Value Problem of Knowledge
We value possessing knowledge more than true belief. Both someone with knowledge and someone with a true belief possess the correct answer to a question. Why is knowledge more valuable than true belief if both contain the correct answer? I examine the philosophy of American pragmatist John Dewey and then I offer a novel solution to this question often called the value problem of knowledge. I pr...
متن کاملThe Origin and Limitations of Modern Mathematical Economics: A Historical Approach
We have first demonstrated that Debreu’s view regarding the publication of The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior by von Neumann and Morgenstern in 1944 as the birth of modern mathematical economics is not convincing. In this paper, we have proposed the hypothesis that the coordinated research programs in the 1930’s, initiated by the Econometric Society and the Cowles Commission for Research...

Economic theories seek a scientific explanation or prediction of economic phenomena using a set of axiom, defined expressions, and theorems. Mathematically explicit economic models are one of these theories. Due to the unknown structure of each model, the existence of measurement error in economic committees and failure of Ceteris Paribus; the Synthetic of any economic theory requires probabili...
